UVMLS Holiday Edition! Next Book and Meeting Date

We had a great discussion of "Annapurna" at the last meeting. Some members couldn't make it, but it was a lot of fun nonetheless. The library actually owns a copy of "Annapurna" now, for those of you who didn't get a chance to read it last time.

For our next meeting, we will be discussing "The Ascent of Rum Doodle," by W.E. Bowman. This is a work of fiction, and was written as a parody of classic expeditionary accounts, including "Annapurna." I thought that, having just read several mountaineering heavy books, it might be nice to read something that pokes fun at the genre. This book is hysterically funny and fairly easy, but also a true classic. For those of you who enjoyed "A Walk in the Woods," the introduction to the latest edition of "Rum Doodle" was written by Bill Bryson (so there's really no excuse to not check it out!).

We'll meet on December 13, from 6:30 to about 8 and have a UVMLS holiday celebration along with a fairly low-key discussion. We'll also have a slideshow of pictures from my father's and my trip to Peru. If anyone has any of their own mountaineering (or any outdoor related) stories or pictures, feel free to bring them to the meeting.

"The Ascent of Rum Doodle" is a truly enjoyable book. I think that everyone will like it and have a good time with the discussion, so if you haven't been able to make it to the last few meetings, this would be a great way to get back into the UVMLS.

UVMLS returns! Winter 2019 edition

After more than a month long break, I think it's time to bring the UVMLS back. Right now, I think a good next meeting date would be Thursday, February 28th. This gives us some time to pick and read our next book. Speaking of which, I have a few ideas for our next read. At the last meeting, we had mentioned maybe branching out and reading a book about long-distance sailing, which, while not "mountain literature," has many themes in common with other books we've read. I'd like to put this out for consideration, but I also think that  A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush , by Eric Newby, could be a good pick that is still mountain-based. It's more of a travel book and less of a hardcore suffering epic. I've put a poll below. If a majority of people select "sailing book," I'll pick one and let the group know which book specifically we're going to read. What do you want to read for our next book? A sailing book (If this option wins, I

Reminder: meeting next week

This is just a quick reminder of our meeting next Thursday. If you haven't already had a chance to read "The Ascent of Rum Doodle", the library has at least one copy which you should be able check out. This is an extremely funny book, and well worth looking into.
