"No Picnic" Review and Upcoming Discussion of "A Walk in the Woods"

Our meeting this past Thursday was quite successful, and featured several new faces. With that said, I would like to apologize for a lack of communication in the days leading up to the meeting. I attempted to send out a reminder, but, for reasons still unknown, the email didn't send.  For those of you who were unaware of the meeting because of this, I'd like to apologize again; I hope that you all still did get a chance to read "No Picnic on Mount Kenya."

I won't be here for the latter half of July, but members in attendance at the last meeting expressed interest in meeting once again in early July. In consideration of the limited amount of time before the next meeting, we chose a book on the spot: "A Walk In the Woods," by Bill Bryson. It's a book about hiking rather than mountaineering, and is a fun, quick read that many of you may already be familiar with. We'll discuss it at our next meeting, which will be held on Thursday, July 12 at the usual time.

UVMLS returns! Winter 2019 edition

After more than a month long break, I think it's time to bring the UVMLS back. Right now, I think a good next meeting date would be Thursday, February 28th. This gives us some time to pick and read our next book. Speaking of which, I have a few ideas for our next read. At the last meeting, we had mentioned maybe branching out and reading a book about long-distance sailing, which, while not "mountain literature," has many themes in common with other books we've read. I'd like to put this out for consideration, but I also think that  A Short Walk in the Hindu Kush , by Eric Newby, could be a good pick that is still mountain-based. It's more of a travel book and less of a hardcore suffering epic. I've put a poll below. If a majority of people select "sailing book," I'll pick one and let the group know which book specifically we're going to read. What do you want to read for our next book? First book

Our first book will be "Touching the Void," by Joe Simpson. For our first meeting, which will be held on February 8 from 6:30-7:30 in the community room of the Tunbridge Public Library, please read the first 6 chapters and come prepared to discuss them.
